Breathing is something most of us take for granted. But when irritants or infections cause our airways to clog up, and our lungs start to strain with effort, every breath becomes precious.

In this episode of "Say Ahh!" we'll take a close look at some common respiratory conditions, including:

  • Coughing
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
Coughing isn't an illness, but a symptom of another condition. It's an important reflex our body uses to get rid of irritants in our lungs and airways, and to clear away infections. But while coughing every now and then is normal, if that cough sticks around, it could be a sign that something's wrong.

A cough that just won't go away can sometimes indicate a bout of bronchitis. In fact, the main symptom of bronchitis is a bad cough. It often starts out dry, but after a few days you're likely to begin coughing up yellow or green mucus. You may also have other symptoms, including:

  • Sore throat
  • Congestion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Soreness in your chest
  • Wheezing
Pneumonia is a respiratory condition that's common, treatable, and very serious -- even deadly. Every year, pneumonia strikes millions of Americans and takes roughly 60 thousand lives. It occurs when the airways in the lungs become infected, making it difficult for oxygen to reach other parts of the body. Fortunately, preventing pneumonia is not that difficult. Here are a few tips to help you steer clear of the disease:
  • Wash your hands often
  • Stay away from sick people
  • Don't smoke -- smoking damages your lungs and weakens your immune system
  • Eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise
